The Diocesan Convention is the annual meeting of a diocese. In our diocese, the annual meeting of the Diocesan Convention is presently held the last full weekend in January at the Cathedral. Convention conducts elections; votes on the budget, resolutions, changes to the diocesan Constitution and Canons, any other actions presented; hears reports, etc. It includes the clergy of the Diocese and elected lay representatives from each of the 92 congregations in the Diocese, as well as ex-officio members of Convention (who are entitled to seat and voice, but not vote) and many visitors (who may observe only). Approximately 500 people attend the Convention. There may be special conventions at other times, generally held for the purpose of electing a bishop, though it may be held for some other purpose.

Certification of Lay Delegates and Alternates

Parishes should have a current Certification of a Lay Delegate form on file with the Governance Office.

If the Lay Delegate Cannot Attend for all or part of the Convention, you must coordinate with the alternate and the rector/vicar. The rector/vicar needs to fill out, sign, and send in the necessary paperwork, (Seating of an Alternate Form) or complete it at the Convention – it must be signed by the rector/vicar, or else the priest-in-charge or senior warden if there’s a vacancy). The alternate needs to know to get in line alphabetically under the actual delegate’s name, and say who’s being replaced and then their own name. If the delegate and alternate have to split the time, the folder must be turned back in to the registration desk for the switchover.
